AACE Response To Insulin Glargine Cancer Risk Articles In Diabetologia
On June 26, 2009 several articles published online in Diabetologia by the European Association for the Study of Diabetes investigated the possible relationship between use of insulin glargine (Lantus, sanofi-aventis) and the development of certain malignancies. The authors themselves, and the accompanying editorial, cautioned against over-interpretation of their limited data and analyses, which precluded them from drawing any firm conclusions. For example, there were contradictory findings among the studies, patient populations were not always comparable, and the duration of observation was short. Nonetheless, since the relationship of type 2 diabetes to cancer is of critical importance, further study is warranted.

Paramedic Struck Off For Drink Driving Whilst On Call

Paramedic, Mr Jonathan Knight has been struck off the HPC Register after he was convicted of driving with an alcohol concentration over twice the prescribed legal limit. A HPC Conduct and Competence Committee heard that the registrant was driving an unmarked emergency response vehicle and was on call at the time he was stopped by police. HPC Panel Chair, Mr John Williams commented: "The panel is of the view that the registrant"s conduct fell well below the standards expected of a health professional and was a very clear breach the HPC Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics. "The panel takes a very serious view of the registrant"s conduct, given that the offence was committed while he was on call, and potentially could have put patients and members of the public at risk." The Panel decided to strike Mr Knight from the Register with immediate effect. Mr Knight was neither present nor represented at the hearing. Health Professions Council
