Massachusetts Health Insurance Law Lowered Uninsured Rate, Had 'Marginal' Effect On Spending, Group Says
The Massachusetts Health Insurance Law of 2006 has allowed the state to have the lowest uninsured rate in the country while having a "marginal impact" on state spending, according to a report by the Massachusetts Taxpayer Association, the AP/Boston Globe reports. MTA was among the groups supporting the bill"s original passage. The report shows that health care spending will increase by $707 million from fiscal year 2006 to FY 2010. Half of that increase would be covered by the federal government, so the annual cost increase for the state would be $88 million, according to MTA. It noted that many workers who had chosen not to purchase employer-provided insurance before the law took effect now have done so, which has resulted in about $750 million in additional costs for businesses each year (AP/Boston Globe, 5/20). White House Reform Chief Was On Boards Of Health Companies With Suspect Practices
Before taking her job as the White House health reform director, Nancy-Ann DeParle earned more than $6 million serving on the boards of major health care corporations, some of which were accused of fraud, mismanagement and regulatory violations during her tenure, the Investigative Reporting Workshop at American University reports on MSNBC.com. Some critics say the corporate relationships could be a conflict of interest for DeParle. Also, while there"s no evidence DeParle was involved in or aware of allegedly fraudulent activities, in three cases, she served on board committees overseeing the companies" legal and regulatory compliance.

British Researchers Call For WHO To 'Condemn Homeopathy' For Serious Diseases
British researchers on Monday requested the WHO "publicly condemn homeopathy as a treatment for serious diseases, such as HIV/AIDS, TB and malaria," amid growing concern that some patients are dying as a result of choosing homeopathy over effective medicines, the Mail & Guardian reports. "The WHO works with national organisations that promote homeopathy and other alternative medicines in their public health programmes," according to the Mail & Guardian.

Comment On Dimebolin (dimebon) Increasing Brain Beta Amyloid In Mouse Models

Dimebolin, originally administered as an antihistamine, has previously been found to help slow the decline of cognitive ability in participants. This study analysed tau and how dimebolin affects build up of the toxic beta amyloid protein, which is widely believed to be linked to the development of dementia. This research showed that while dimebolin had a beneficial effect it actually caused an increase of the beta amyloid in mouse models. "This head scratching research has thrown up surprising results and suggests that while dimebolin provides cognitive benefits it may actually increase levels of toxic beta amyloid in the brain. One possible explanation may be that dimebolin is accelerating the process of beta amyloid development, which may reduce its toxicity. The questions surrounding whether beta amyloid causes nerve death in Alzheimer"s or is a bi-product of the process must be addressed by further research. "One in three people over 65 will die with dementia. Further, more robust research is needed to clarify whether dimebolin is an effective treatment for Alzheimer"s in the long term and if these puzzling increases in beta amyloid are also seen in human brains.
