Therapy Technique Cuts Divorce/Separation Rate By Nearly 50 Percent
Four simple questions on well-being asked at the start of each session of ongoing couples therapy can greatly increase chances for reconciliation and improved relationships, according to a newly published study. The largest clinical trial with couples to date, it shows that divorce and separation rates for couples that used this feedback technique were 46.2 percent less than that of couples who received therapy as usual. The findings, published in the August 3, 2009, Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, are the results of a 2-year study conducted at the Vestfold Family Counseling Center in Norway by a U.S.-Norwegian team of researchers.

Does Adding Simehicone To Sodium Phosphate Bowel Preparation Benefit Colonscopy
Bowel preparation has been reported inadequate in 10%-75% of colonoscopic examinations. None of the preparations reached all the requirements of safety, acceptance to patients with negligible discomfort, and rapid cleansing. Polyethyleneglycol is considered as the gold standard for colonoscopic bowel preparation (Grade IA), and aqueous sodium phosphate was an alternative regimen to PEG solution (Grade IA). This consensus also stated that adjunctive therapy, such as bisacodyl, metoclopramide, and simethicone, was shown to improve the quality of bowel preparation. Simethicone works as an adjunct to bowel preparationwith the purpose of diminishing foam formation and improving visualization during colonoscopy. However, the benefit of simethicone in improving colonic bowel preparation, however, was not explored in previous studies.

APIC Launches Online Infection Prevention Course

The first of six online courses to educate healthcare professionals on preventing the transmission of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) is being launched by the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC). Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) cause 99,000 deaths in the U.S. each year. The "APIC Healthcare-Associated Infections Elimination Library" compiles APIC"s evidence-based elimination guides into an interactive, online format. The APIC course can be used to educate all hospital staff, from the novice to more experienced healthcare workers. This is the first component of APIC"s Online Learning Center. Elimination of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in hospital settings is the first module in the APIC HAI Elimination Library. Future courses will cover catheter-related blood stream infections, catheter-associated urinary tract infections, C. difficile, surgical site infections and ventilator-associated pneumonia. "APIC"s new online library is designed to ensure that all healthcare workers can easily access critical learning about the reduction of HAIs," said APIC CEO Kathy L. Warye. "This is the first time that APIC content is being offered in this way and supports our overall strategy to deliver quality education as broadly and conveniently as possible." Courses include case studies, links to published guidelines and real-time feedback to assess the learner"s performance. Participants can obtain continuing education credit for completed coursework.
